Despite his young age of 19, Lenila
Lebarlaya Peter holds a top position
among the Samburu community.
The Form 3 student at Oldonyiro
Secondary School in Isiolo County is
the leader of the Lunyaparai clan. He
was appointed last year to be in
charge of the clan by elders who saw
the potential in him.
To prove to the elders that their
choice was indeed right, the humble
and focused student has since
declared his commitment towards
sensitising youths in the area on the
importance of education.
In Samburu culture, education is not
valued. Many young people stay at
home taking care of animals, a
culture that Lenila wants to change.
He is also organizing forums to
improve behaviours and highlight
dangers of teen pregnancies arising
from premarital sex. The form three
student rules over more than 8,000
members who are occupants of Isiolo
and Laikipia counties.
